Dianne Lorden, owner of Renaissance Portraits

Dianne Lorden, the owner/operator of Renaissance Portraits, is an editor and writer for a New Jersey newspaper. She also takes part in juried art shows and conducts workshops.

The Egg Tempera and Oils Workshop

The Egg Tempera and Oils Workshop covers in detail the use of this Renaissance-style painting technique. It includes the formula for egg tempera and the techniques for painting portraits with this medium combined with dry colors. The process also involves the use of glazes and washes, and can be used for still lifes and other subjects.

Participants will make their own egg tempera and mix colors for an underpainting, followed by washes or glazes to complete the piece.

The Renaissance Portraits Workshop

The Renaissance Portraits Workshop, which Dianne runs while wearing medieval attire, includes a lesson on the basics of drawing faces and an opportunity for participants to complete their own Renaissance Portrait prints.

Dianne shares the formula and techniques for egg tempera and potter's pigments, as used in oil portraits, and also teaches something of the history of illumination of manuscripts. An exercise in Celtic borders is included.

The workshop also covers information about working period festivals, including costume requirements and Shakespearean English.
